Things You Should Be Thinkin' About (When You Paint)

  • Speed combats hesitancy - work quick.
  • Free your mind, and your brush will follow. (Shut off your brain.)
  • See and respond, nothing more.
  • Squint!!! Shapes of value (there are no "outlines")
  • Proportions = siting.
  • Painting as a universe. Everything relates to everything else in your painting! (Sizes are relative to one another, values are relative.)
  • Check your values!!!
  • You only know a value is "dark" or "light" by its relationship to the value next to it.
  • General to specific - never the other way.
  • Your painting should "arrive" at the same time. (All at once as if out of a fog. Don't focus on the figure.)
  • Control your edges.
  • Atmospheric perspectives provides "depth."
  • Identify your lightest light and darkest dark from the very beginning of your painting.
  • Step back from your painting and LOOK!!!!!
  • CONTRAST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
